51 ハードゥロウの滝 [ウェンズリーデイル] (Hardrow Force, Wensleydale)
ウェンズリーデイル上流の村ハードゥロウには、ハードゥロウの滝がある。ウア川の支流の一つにある滝である。落差が100ｆｔ（約30m）あり、垂直にいっきに流れ落ちる滝としては、イングランドで最大である。
ターナーは、1816年ににこの滝を訪れてスケッチし、翌年にかけて、それをもとにして水彩画を描いている。その絵にあるハードゥロウの滝は、アルプスかどこかにあるような、雄大でロマンティックな滝である。
この絵は銅版画にもなっていて、是非、実際の滝を見てみたいものだと、出かけていったことがある。
この滝を見にゆくには、村にある「ザ・グリーン・ドラゴン・イン」という小さなホテルの木戸口のようなところで、入場料を払わなければならなかった。おそらく滝は、このホテルの私有地にでもあるのだろう。
木戸口を抜けてホテルの裏側へまわると、小川に沿って滝へとつづく山道がある。期待に胸をふくらませて歩いてゆくと、やがてゴーゴーと水の流れ落ちる音が聞こえてくる。
その音は、川に沿って道が左へ曲がったところで、急に大きくなった。そして目の前に、滝があらわれた。「あっ！」と思った瞬間、つぎに「あれ？」と思った。
それというのも、ターナーはハードゥロウの滝を、日光の華厳の滝（落差97m）のような大瀑布に描いていたが、目の前にある滝は、そうではなかったからである。
しばらく滝を眺めていて、彼が滝を誇張して描いていたことに、ようやく思い当たった。わたしは、彼がそうして絵を描くことがあるのを、すっかり忘れていたのだった。
ターナーの絵には、実景を誇張して描いたものが多い。そのなかでもハードゥロウの滝の絵は、その最たるものである。彼の手になると、落差100ftの、日本人から見ればどうってことのない滝も、落差「100m」の滝に変貌する。
それにしても、誇張のし過ぎではないか。彼の絵を頭に思い描いてこの滝を見にゆくと、その「落差」に落胆することになる。
だが実際の滝がどうであれ、ターナーの絵は、彼の傑作の一つであることにはちがいない。絵は、こうでなければならないのかもしれない。さすがイギリス人自慢の、風景画の大家である。
グリーン・ドラゴン・インはターナーの時代からあったというが、彼はここには泊まっていない。村のようすは、ターナーの時代とほとんど変わっていないという。
イギリスの田舎ではよくあることで、100年や200年たっても村のようすなどが少しも変わらない。むかし絵に描かれた風景が、いまもそのまま残っているところもある。多少不便であっても変化をもとめない。この頑固さと変わらなさも、イギリスの魅力の一つである、とわたしは思う。

ホテルの名前は、むかし滝に棲んでいたという伝説の竜からきている。ホテルの売店で、地元の工芸家によるという、緑色に塗った陶製の小さな置物「ハッピー・ドラゴン（幸福の竜）」を売っていた。子供が粘土細工でつくったような、じつに稚拙なものであった。それにもかかわらず結構な値段がしたが、記念に求めることにした。何かいいことがあるかもしれない。

Another most famous fall, not only in Yorkshire but also in England, is
Hardrow Force which is one of the tributaries of the River Ure. Having
the height of 100 ft, the force is the highest unbroken waterfall in England.
Turner visited this waterfall in 1816 and sketched it. From 1816 to 1817
he painted it in watercolours as a great waterfall somewhere in the Alps,
so I wanted to visit there to see it.
To go to the fall, I had to pass through the gate of the Green Dragon Inn.
Perhaps the fall is owned by the hotel, I remember I paid a small fee there.
Walking a mountain pass continuing from the back of the hotel along the
beck for a while, I could hear the sound of water. It became larger, when
the pass turned to left, and Hardrow Force appeared at last. I let out
a little joyful cry. But it turned to some disappointed tones soon, because
the fall was not the great one painted by Turner. And I remembered he painted
the fall with exaggeration.
A 100 ft waterfall was painted by Turner as if it were 100 m's fall like
Kegon Waterfall of Japan, which has the height of 97 m (323 ft) and one
of the three great waterfalls in Japan. And I pictured to myself Hardrow
Force must be such a great waterfall. I had been perfectly cheated by the
picture of Turner.
Whether the real fall is large or not, his watercolour, which was engraved
later, is one of his masterpieces.
I heard the Green Dragon Inn was open in the days of Turner, though he
did not stay there.
In the shop of the hotel, small potteries of "Happoy Dragon" painted in grteen were sold The name of the hotel comes from this legendary dragon having lived in the fall. I thought the works were very unskillful stuff like something made by children (I am sorry for the artist!). It seemed to be expensive, but I bought one as my mermory of visiting there.
