(Haworth/the World of "Wuthering Heights")

There is a graveyard behind the church. And the parsonage, where Brontёfamily used to live, is beyond the graveyard.
The parsonage, now a museum, is a neat and beautiful Georgian house with quiet atmospere.
Having studied hard under difficulties, Patrick, sisters' father, became an ecclesiastic of the Church of England. When he was appointed a perpetual curate of Haworth Parish Church in 1820, he was very happy with Maria, his wife, and six little children.
But, the next year, after Maria's death by stomach cancer, he was depressed by great grief and anxiety about the future. He seldom talked and became hard to please, neglecting his children. When something made him sullen, he often fired a pistol in Haworth Moor, back of the parsonege. Gloom hung over the family.
However for sisters, there were much of free time and space to expand their imaginations in the moor, the bleak and barren land covered with plenty of heather.
From the window of the 1st floor of the parsonage, I could see the path leading to Haworth Moor, where the sisters often rambled. About 3 and a half miles to the west from the parsonage, there is Top Withens, the hill top and there stands a ruined farmhouse which is said to be the model of the Earnshaw's home in "Wuthering Heights".
Looking at the direction of Top Withens from the window, I felt as if I had heard the call of the moors.

"For the moors! For the moors! where the short grass
Like velvet beneath us should lie!
For the moors! For the moors! where the high pass
Rose sunny against the clear sky!

For the moors! where the linnet was trilling
Its song on the old granite stone,
Where the lark, the wild skylark, was filling
Every breast with delight like its own."
(From Emily Brontё's poem)
