56 マカー ［スウェイルデイル］ (Muker, Swaledale)
B6270号線をスウェイルデイルの上流へとさらにたどってゆくと、小さな川にかかる橋の先に、マカーの村の家並みが見えてくる。スウェイルデイルでもっとも美しい村として知られているところで、たしかにひと目見ただけで絵になるところだとわかる。
マカーの村を流れている川は、スウェイル川の支流になるマカー・ベックである。本流は、村に入る手前のところで、北のほうから流れてくる。
この村で、おもしろい話を見つけた。
村の北、この水彩画で右奥にある丘は、キズドン・ヒルと呼ばれている。かつて、スウェイルデイル最上流の村の一つであるケルドゥからは、この丘を越えてくる道があった。この道は、マカーからは現在のB6270号線となり、19kmほど下ると、スウェイルデイルのちょうど中間にある村グリントンに至る。
このケルドゥからグリントンまでの道は、かつては「コーアプス・ロード(Corpse Road)」と呼ばれていたという。直訳すれば「死体街道」となるが、なんとも不気味な名前である。なぜこの道がこう呼ばれていたのか。
グリントンには、ノルマン時代に建てられた古い教会があるが、かつてこの地方には、そこにしか教会がなかった。そのためデイルの上流で死人がでると、葬儀と埋葬のために、男たちが棺をかついで徒歩でこの道をゆき、グリントンまで運ばなければならなかった。この道がコーアプス・ロードと呼ばれるようになったのには、こうした訳があったのである。
棺をかついだ男たちは、途中の村々のイン（居酒屋を兼ねた小さな旅館）で休憩をとることにしていた。葬列に参加した人たちにとっては、そこでのビールを一杯やりながらの休憩は、悲しみのなかでの楽しみでもあった。インのなかには、マカーの「ザ・クイーンズ・ヘッド」のように、葬列用の特別のビール用マグまで用意しているところがあった。そして1杯が2杯となると、グリントンまで一日ではたどり着けないこともあったという。
村に着くたびに一杯やって休憩していたら、時間もかかるわけである。悲しみの涙ではじまった葬列も、グリントンに着くころには皆すっかりでき上がり、さぞかしにぎやかなものになっていたことだろう。一杯やれずに恨めしかったのは、棺の中の故人だけだったかもしれない。
When I was driving along the B6270 upwards, a lovely village came into
sight over the bridge on a small river. The village is Muker and the river
is not the River Swale but the Muker Beck, one of the tributaries of the
Swale.
There is Kisdon Hill behind this peaceful village. I found an interesting
story here.
At one time, there was an old road from Keld over the hill, and it led
to Grinton of middle Swaledale, via Muker and several villages and hamlets.
The road between Muker and Grinton is now a part of B6270. This road, starting
from Keld, was once called "Corpse Road". What a horrible name
it is!
Once there was only one church in Grinton in this district. When someone
died in the upper Swaledale, the body was carried in a coffin by men on
foot to Grinton.
The journey conveying the coffin was halted at inns of almost every village
for refreshment with a mug of beer. The Queen's Head at Muker is said to
have provided special mugs for funeral processions.
If men carrying the coffin drink beer at every inn, they would get quite
drunk. Therefore, sometimes the procession could not get to the destination
in a day. And the funeral procession which started with grief and tears
might become noisy and cheerful one at the time when it arrived at Grinton
Church.
The only person who was not able to enjoy the journey with the refreshment
must be the deceased in the coffin.
