ケルドゥからスウェイトに戻る。
そこから南にあるウェンズリー・デイルには、峠道バタータブス・パスが通じている。この道は、標高がヨークシャーで第3位のグレート・シャナー・フェル（標高約716m）と第8位のアボットサイド・コモン（標高約675m）のあいだを通っていて、全長は8kmくらいある。
この峠道は、荒涼とした高地につづいており、途中に人家などはまったくない。冬にここを通ったときには、「途中で車が故障でもしたらどうしよう」と心細くなってきたくらいだった。
この道の途中の道路わきに、「バタータブス」と呼ばれている穴がある。石灰岩層が垂直方向に浸食されてできた深い縦穴である。穴の名前を直訳すれば「バターの湯船」とでもなるのか、峠道の名前は、ここからきている。
穴は、差し渡しが数メートルから10mくらいで、入り組んだ複雑な形をしている。地表からいきなり垂直に落ち込んでいて、深さは30mくらいといわれている。しかし、穴のまわりに転落防止用の柵があるわけでもなく、あまり近づけないので、底のほうまでは見えない。それでもドライヴの途中の行楽客が、首をのばしては恐る恐る、覗き込んでいる。
水彩画は、ウェンズリーデイルへむかう途中、バタータブス・パスからふり返ったときの眺めを描いたもの。縦穴は、道が大きくカーブしているところの内側と外側の、すこし離れた2カ所にある。

バタータブス・パスの縦穴 (Buttertubs)
Returning from Keld to south via Thwaite, Then I drove the Buttertubs Pass
which leads to Wensleydale. The road, a mountain pass running between Great
Shunner Fell, 2349 feet above sea level, the third highest in Yorkshire
and Abbotside Common, 2213 feet, the eighth highest, continues for about
5 miles in the most remote and deserted highland, with no house. During
the driving, I was worried what I should do in case of car trouble.
Haifway to Wensleydale, at the roadside, there are deep holes, called Buttertubs,
which were formed vertically by errosion of limestone. The depths are said
to be about 100 feet. In spite of there being no fence, people stopped
on the way, looking into the holes timidly.
