(Faraway My Yorkshire)

(The Yorkshire Dales)

(Near West Scrafton, Coverdale)

The beauty of the countryside of England is not because it is wild and untouched. The countryside of England is used by people as fields or pastures almost to the top of the hills, but they don't look damaged by human activitiues. I can feel nature in it. The countryside has a unique nature, coexisting with human activities. I think this style of nature is similar to that of "satoyama" in Japan. "Satoyama" means literally woods or mountains by villages, which villagers have often taken care of. And they have used its forest resources for their various activities in life. Once villagers gathered firewood and fallen leaves to make compost in satoyama. And many old folk tales were born there.
