(Faraway My Yorkshire)

(My Flat in Leeds and around it)

(My Flat of Cumberland Road)

Up to now I have made a journey around Yorkshire. Finally I will return to the area of Leeds as my second home.
The flat I atayed at, which was the accommodation belonging to the University of Leeds, was located on Cumberland Road, Headingley. The area was near Kirkstall Abbey, the cradle of the city of Leeds. I heard that "Headingley" means "the origin" or "the birth place".
Headingley was a tranquil residential area and there were many old terraced houses and semi-detached houses made of stones. Those houses were unfamiliar to Japanese like me at first, but I understood soon the charms and peculiar tastes of these English town houses.
There were several University's accommodations for long stay visitors in this area. The house which I lived in was as large as three families to use. Having been built in the 19th century with the Gothic style, it looked like a vicarrage. The house is said to have been yellowish grey once but it became black from deposited soot.
Near my flat, there were larger houses where several families could stay. I heard those houses were built more than 100 or 150 years ago. The pitch of those roofs was steep and there were many chimney stacks on them. The houses looked very grave. As I had never seen those houses before, I became very interested in them. They looked gloomy and weird on dark cloudy days like haunted houses at twilight. I had seen such houses only in the horror cinemas.
