54 マーリック修道院 [スウェイルデイル] (Marrick Priory, Swaledale)
リッチモンドからスウェイルデイルをA6108号線、B6270号線と10kmほどさかのぼると、北側の対岸に、小さな教会の塔が見えてくる。ここは、かつてベネディクト修道会の女子修道院の、マーリック修道院があったところである。
この修道院は1154年に建設がはじまり、完成したのはいつかよく分からないが、1540年11月17日に解散させられたところである。
いまは、マーリック修道院の大部分が農家の建物に生まれ変わっていて、廃墟として残っているのは、ごくわずかである。
この水彩画は、B6270号線から見た、マーリック修道院のあったところを描いたもの。中央に見える塔は、修道院の廃墟に隣接している教区教会のものである。創建は1149年であるが、1811年に再建されている。手前を左から右へと流れているのが、スウェイル川である。
ターナーは1816年にこの修道院の廃墟をスケッチし、それをもとにした水彩画と銅版画を残している。それらでは、おだやかなスウェイルデイルが、アルプスかどこかの険しい深山幽谷のように描かれている。そしてそのなかに、教区教会の塔と修道院の廃墟が、ポツンと小さく描かれている。いかにもロマン派的な風景画である。
このマーリック修道院には、一つのラヴ・ロマンスが伝えられている。
修道院が解散させられる数年前のことである。ヘンリー8世の宮廷に、イザベラ・ボーフォートという美しい女官がいた。イザベラを見初めた王は、彼女に結婚を迫ったという。しかし彼女には、すでにエドワード・ハーバートという、結婚を約束した宮廷人の恋人がいた。
そこでイザベラは、王との結婚から逃れようと、ある日ひそかに宮廷を抜け出すと、遠く離れたこの地方にまでやって来た。そしてマーリック修道院に、庇護を求めるのだった。
すると修道院の院長は、彼女を受け入れて修道院にかくまい、さらにエドワードとの手紙のやりとりも特別に許したという。
修道院解散法でマーリック修道院が閉鎖されるとなったとき、その知らせをうけたエドワードは、修道院に駆けつけると、イザベラを馬に乗せて連れだすとのだった。そのあとふたりは、遙かイングランド南西部のサマーセットまで逃げのび、そこで結婚したという。
イザベラ、修道院が閉鎖されるまでの4年間ここにかくまわれていたというから、彼女がここへ逃げ込んできたのは、1536年だったと思われる。ヘンリー8世は1536年5月29日にジェイン・シーモアを3度目の王妃とするので、その前の出来事だっただろう。
それにしてもイザベラとエドワードの行動は、イングランド史上最強にして最大の暴君にそむいたもので、それこそ命がけだったにちがいない。
When I was driving along the A6108 from Richmond then along the B6270,
about 6 miles upwards, a small tower of a church and a hamlet came into
view on the north bank of the Swale. It was the village of Marrick.
There was Marrick Priory for Benedictine nun here, which was founded in
about 1154 and dissolved on the 11th of November in 1540. The tower, rebuilt
in 1811, was a part of the parish church of Marrick built in 1149 adjacent
to the site of the priory.
Apart from the church, most of the priory's buildings are incorporated
in the farmhouse and only few ruins remain.
Swaledale is a very peaceful dale. Turner sketched the dale and the priory
in 1816, and later he painted it in watercolours very romantically as if
the priory was located in the Alps. This work is also one of his masterpiece.
It was engraved later.
The priory played a part in the story of beautiful Isabella Beaufort, a
maid of horor of the Court of Henry VIII.
It was four years before the dissolution of the priory when Isabella came
here seeking a sanctuary. Henry wished to marry her, but she loved Edward
Herbert, a courtier, and had no intention to become Henry's queen.
Getting away from the Court secretly one day, she came to the priory. The
prioress not only hid her for four years but also allowed her to correspond
with Edward. When the priory was closed, he rode up here and took her to
Somerset and married her there.
Henry married Jane Saymour as the third queen on the 29th of July in 1536.
Therefore, the time when Isabella had escaped from the Court might be before
Henry married Jane.
The behaviour of Izabella and Edward was in defiance of Henry's mind, very
dangerous, putting their lives at risk.
